About

ARTHRITIS

Generally speaking, pain and stiffness of the joints are termed as Arthritis. Though there are over 100 types of arthritis, the two common types of arthritis are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Of this osteoarthritis is very commonly reported.

Osteoarthritis

When the joints undergo wear and tear as we age, it leads to osteoarthritis. Knee, hips, feet, and spine are the joints that get osteoarthritis. Though they usually hurt the joints, they do not make the patient sick.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

  • Pain in the affected joints
  • Pain while walking
  • Morning stiffness. For some people, stiffness is reported after resting also.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

When the body’s immune system attacks the joints, inflammation is formed and is termed as rheumatoid arthritis. This is a form of autoimmune disease.

Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Pain, stiffness and inflammation in the affected joints. Generally, rheumatoid arthritis affects minor joints.
  • Pain while walking.
  • Morning stiffness may usually last for more than an hour and can be fatigue-causing.
  • Some patients report weight loss also.

DIAGNOSIS OF ARTHRITIS IN SIDDHA MEDICINE

• The symptoms manifested are studied by the Siddha Doctor by probing and getting answers from the patient. This probing gives clues to the type of arthritis the patient has developed.

• The Siddha practitioner might check the motion range in the affected joints.

• An elevated vatha humor in the Nadi pattern diagnosis by the Siddha practitioner.

• In Neykuri analysis, a snake-like pattern of the oil indicates the Vatham.

• X-rays and other imaging reports like CT Scan and MRI can tell exactly the type of arthritis and the intensity of the damage to the cartilage and bone tissues.

• Blood reports can tell the presence of Rheumatoid Factor (RH), an antibody that is found in the blood in case the patient has developed Rheumatoid Arthritis.

TREATMENT FOR ARTHRITIS IN SIDDHA MEDICINE

• Using anti-vatha herbs like Asvagantha, Cissus quadrangularis (pirandai), nut semicarpus (serangottai), and other external applications.

• Avoiding foods that give soar taste (pulippu) like tamarind, tomato, etc, and tuberous vegetables like potato, yam, carrot, etc.
